Bringing home two coveted two-star awards were Isle of Man Meats’ Shoulder of Pork and Barnsley Lamb Chops, a brand new cut for 2022. Four one-star wins were given to Isle of Man Meats Matured Sirloin Roast, Short Leg of Manx Loaghtan, Saddle of Lamb and Belly Pork.

Select comments from the Great Taste Awards judges included:

‘Superb visual impact and stunning aromas of rich meaty grass-fed lamb, bursting with flavours of the pas-ture and what tastes like salt marsh seaweed. The natural oils and fats are perfectly clean and pure and a joy to taste. The mouthfeel was perfect in terms of both texture and softness in the eating experience, showing perfect husbandry of the animal.’

(For Barnsley Lamb Chops – 2 stars)

‘Wonderfully presented, juicy looking joint of pork. Fabulous succulent texture from this well marbled pork that melts in the mouth. There is a slightly gamey but true pork flavour with stunning flavour from the fat - this shows a quality and correct breed of pig that has been allowed to mature slowly to produce excellent flavour.’

(For Shoulder of Pork – 2 stars)

‘We enjoyed the aroma of the Manx Loaghtan lamb, oozing delicious scents and enticing the palate. The flavour notes are rich in grass, almost buttery…’

‘…a good quality cut with provenance that we respect.’

(For Short Leg of Manx Loaghtan – 1 star)

‘Enticing and inviting with stunningly good crackling, and superb meat to fat ratio too, this belly pork has rich grassy and indeed corn flavour notes within, the crackling eats very well indeed. We love the sweet succulent flavour notes within the pork meat and fat.’

(For Belly Pork – 1 star)

‘A well butchered, rolled saddle of lamb that had taken on a good colour during cooking. There was a gen-erous layer of tasty fat which meant the flesh was succulent and tender. Full of flavour. Delicious.’

(For Saddle of Lamb – 1 star)

‘A stunning looking joint with a beautiful caramelisation. A really appealing layer of crispy golden fat coats this delicious ruby red meat. The fat is deeply rich, creamy and satisfying with a luxurious and indulgent flavour. Beefy flavour notes are warm, grassy and fresh yet manage to deliver a deep level of savoury satis-faction. A really rounded and balanced flavour… a really commendable joint of beef.’

(For Matured Sirloin Roast – 1 star)

Kirree Kermode, procurement officer at Isle of Man Meats, explained the importance of the awards:

‘We’re thrilled that six of our 100% local meats have received recognition at this year’s Great Taste Awards. There were 16 wins in total for Manx producers, including Isle of Man Creamery, Isle of Man Goats and Paddy’s Hooked on Fish by Robinsons Ltd. So it’s not just a big win for us, but for our Island, our farmers and community.’

‘In a time when food makers across the world are experiencing unprecedented difficulties, it’s heartening that Manx produce is gaining commendations on a global stage.’

‘As the world’s only entire nation UNESCO biosphere region, the Island has a unique story to tell, and it’s spreading far and wide through the pure provenance of our food. There’s literally nowhere in the world like the Isle of Man. There’s nowhere offering the heritage and the quality that we are offering. And that’s why it’s never been more important to support our local producers. Manx is world-class. Manx carries global clout. And it’s right here on our doorsteps.’
